CWG 2018: Satwik, Chirag bag silver in men's doubles

New Delhi, Apr 15 (ANI): Shuttler duo Satwik Rankireddy and Chirag Chandrashekhar Shetty settled for silver after losing to England's Marcus Ellis and Chris Langridge in straight games in men's doubles badminton finals in the 21st Commonwealth Games here on Sunday. Satwik and Chirag lost 13-21 and 16-21 to Elis and Langridge as England clinched gold in the badminton competition. Satwik and Chirag, although showed promise at the beginning of the match, they trailed behind Elis and Langridge in most parts of the game, that lasted for nearly 40 minutes.

Gold Coast (Australia), Apr 15 (ANI): Badminton national coach Pullela Gopichand on Sunday praised performance of every shuttler in the Commonwealth Games 2018. He also said that the performance of shuttlers shows team's strength and will also bring more medals for the country. "I think the overall the team's performance is been very good, when you look at the different events I would think in each of these events everyone played well. as a team we are good and hopefully we can get many more results in the future," said Gopichand.

CWG 2018: Eye on Asian Games, Marry Kom thanks countrymen after clinching gold

Gold Coast (Australia), Apr 15 (ANI): M.C. Mary Kom bagged India's 18th gold medal at the Gold Coast on April 14. Giving a message, Mary Kom thanked countrymen. "I am very happy that I could win a gold medal for my country. I want to thank my countrymen. This year we have won nine medals in boxing. We will work harder so that we can perform better in the upcoming Asian Games," she said. The five-time world champion thrashed Northern Ireland's 21-year-old Kristina O'Hara in an unanimous points decision in the finals of the women's 48kg boxing category.

Saina Nehwal's family elated over her gold victory

Hyderabad, Apr 15 (ANI): Ace badminton champion Saina Nehwal's family expressed happiness and satisfaction on her victory after she defeated World No. 3 PV Sindhu to claim gold in the ongoing 21st Commonwealth Games on Sunday. Her Mother said, "I am very happy that with this victory she fulfilled her aim. She was suffering injury and with this game she has recovered herself." Expressing her happiness, her grandmother said, "I am very happy that she won this game. I wish she achieves even more." Saina Nehwal has also become the first Indian to win two singles gold medals at the Commonwealth Games.

CWG 2018: Shuttler Kidambi Srikanth settles for silver

New Delhi, Apr 15 (ANI): Star Indian shuttler Kidambi Srikanth ended his run at the 21st Commonwealth Games on Sunday with a silver medal in the badminton men's singles final. The 25-year old shuttler conceded defeat against Malaysia's Lee Chong Wei. Earlier, Indian shuttler Saina Nehwal clinched gold after a 21-18, 23-21 victory in the all-Indian women's singles final against PV Sindhu. With Srikanth's feat, India continues to stand third in the points table with 65, including 26 gold, 19 silver and 20 bronze medals.

CWG 2018: Heena Sidhu expresses satisfaction with performance

New Delhi, Apr 14 (ANI): Decorated shooter Heena Sidhu on Saturday expressed satisfaction with her performance at the ongoing Commonwealth Games 2018 and said that winning medals there meant a lot to her. She also asserted that athletes need funding to get good quality coaches and physiotherapists so that they can perform well. She also said that efforts must be made to save shooting from being excluded in the next Commonwealth Games. "I am very happy with my performance. Commonwealth Games is an important event and winning a medal there means a lot to me," said Sidhu. We need funding to get good quality coaches and physiotherapists. Help from any corner be it govt or private sponsors matter a lot. Indian shooters are performing well this is a reason, we need to save shooting from being excluded from next Commonwealth Games," added Sidhu. Sidhu won a gold medal women's 25m and a silver medal at women's 10m air pistol events at the games.

CWG 2018: Wrestler Vinesh Phogat bags second consecutive Games Gold

New Delhi, Apr 14 (ANI): Wrestler Vinesh Phogat won gold in women's freestyle 50 kg by beating Canada's Jessica Macdonald 13-3 in her last bout. She ended at the top of the standings at the end of the Nordic (round robin) format. With this win, Vinesh became the first Indian woman to win two wrestling gold medals at the Games She had also won gold in the 48 kg category in Glasgow four years ago. New Delhi, Apr 14 (ANI): Indian shooters continued to bring laurels even on the 11th day of the ongoing 21st edition of the Commonwealth Games, with Sanjeev Rajput bagging a gold medal in the men's 50 m rifle 3 positions here on Saturday. The 37-year-old shot a new Commonwealth Games record of 454.5 in the finals to clinch India's 19th gold medal at the Belmont Shooting Centre in Gold Coast. Earlier, Rajput shot 391 in kneeling, 399 in prone and 390 in standings to top the qualification stage with 1,180 points.

CWG 2018: Shreyasi Singh wins gold in double trap

New Delhi, Apr 11 (ANI): Continuing India's medal rush at the ongoing 21st Commonwealth Games, shooter Shreyasi Singh clinched the country's first gold medal on the seventh day in the women's double trap final at the Belmont Shotgun Range on Wednesday. The 26-year-old secured the top honours after edging past Emma Cox of Australia in a shoot-off with a score of 96+ 2. The two opponents were tied on 96 before the Indian shot one more to claim the gold. With the medals, India's tally at the Games has now increased to a total of 23, including 12 gold, 4 silver and 7 bronze.

New Delhi, Apr 11 (ANI): Indian shooters continued their medal rush at the ongoing 21st Commonwealth Games here on Wednesday, with Om Prakash Mitharval settling for the bronze medal in the men's 50m pistol event. Mitharwal, who also picked up the bronze in the men's 10m air pistol final, registered a score of 201.1 to finish at the third spot of the men's 50m pistol event. Woman athlete runs tea stall to earn living

Coimbatore (Tamil Nadu), Apr 09 (ANI): 45-year-old A Kalaimani, an athlete by profession is now running a tea-stall in Tamil Nadu's Coimbatore to earn a livelihood. Kalaimani, who is a mother of three, had participated in national and state level Masters Athletics events and won four gold medals. "There is no help from the government for sportspersons. I earn Rs 400-500 from the tea shop, run my family and manage my sports requirements," she told ANI. Kalaimani, who is participating in 41-km marathons with her team 'Phoenix Runners,' regularly attends her morning workout sessions and runs for 21 kilometers as part of her practice. Kalaimani has studied up to Class X and participated in kabaddi and athletics events during her schooling. Kalaimani said, "I had approached the banks for loans but they refused to give. Hence, I took help from my friend for financial support to participate in national events."

CWG 2018: Weightlifting medal rush continues with Vikas Thakur's bronze

New Delhi, Apr 08 (ANI): Indian weightlifters continued their medal rush at the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games 2018 as Vikas Thakur won a bronze medal in the sport on Sunday. Thakur lifted a total of 351 kg in men's 94 kg weightlifting. In the snatch, he lifted 152 kg in his first attempt and 155 kg in the second. In the third attempt, Thakur successfully lifted his personal best of 159 kg to take the silver medal position by the end of the round. In clean and jerk, the Ludhiana power-man successfully completed his first attempt of 192 kg, however, his next two attempts went in vain as he failed to lift 200 kg to drop to bronze medal spot. The gold medal was taken by Steven Kari from Papua New Guinea with his combined lift of 370kg, including a final successful 216kg lift in clean and jerk. Boady Santavy finished second with a combined lift of 369kg.
