Huge explosions in China's Tianjin port kill 17

Tianjin, Aug 13 (ANI): Hospitals in Chinese port city of Tianjin rushed to provide medical aid to injured people early on Thursday (August 13) after two massive explosions ripped through the city, killing at least 17. Around 400 people were injured in the explosions caused by flammable goods which ripped through an industrial area late on Wednesday night. President Xi Jinping demanded that authorities quickly extinguish the fire caused by the blasts and "make full effort to rescue and treat the injured and ensure the safety of people and their property". Tianjin is home to around 15 million people, making it one of the biggest cities in China. It is also home to one of the country's biggest ports. Industrial accidents are not uncommon in China following three decades of breakneck economic growth. A blast at an auto parts factory in eastern China killed 75 people a year ago when a room filled with metal dust exploded.

Lack of Medical Facilities Makes Life Difficult for People in Gilgit Baltistan

Gilgit Baltistan, 11 August 2015-: People in Gilgit Baltistan often have nothing to fall back on if a family member falls sick. A serious illness and the costs involved in treatment can destroy households as the public-sector healthcare facilities here are in shambles. People in the remote region of Gilgit Baltistan, illegally occupied by Pakistan for decades, have little means to get themselves treated in case of serious illnesses. Officially there are 14 doctors over an area of 27,000 sq miles but in actual terms even those are not available at work. Gilgit, the main town, has only one city hospital which is visited by at least 2000 patients on a daily basis. However, this hospital also remains poorly staffed, poorly equipped and unable to meet the needs. The medical infrastructure has been the same for decades as the Pakistan government has not been able to allocate sufficient funding for better healthcare facilities in these areas. Even the medicines that are purchased in bulk are

Iraq government backs PM's proposal to end roles of deputy PM, vice president

Baghdad, Aug 09 (ANI): Iraq's council of ministers on Sunday approved a package of reform measures, including cancelling the positions of vice president and deputy prime minister. It followed a call by Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi to remove the positions as part of an initiative to improve state finances and reduce corruption. The measures were announced in an online statement. They follow weeks of protests in Baghdad and southern cities demanding a better government and a call on Friday by Iraq's leading Shi'ite cleric for al-Abadi to do more. Iraq has three vice presidents, two Shi'ites and a Sunni, and three deputy prime ministers, a Shi'ite, a Sunni and a Kurd. The constitution gives Abadi the right to dismiss ministers with parliament's consent. Some Baghdad residents welcomed Abadi's new measures but said more needed to be done. One man said the decision didn't go far enough.
