Slumdog Millionaire bags Golden Globes

British Director, Danny Boyle¿s film "Slumdog Millionaire" enjoyed a dominating evening at the Golden Globes on Sunday, winning four of the coveted awards including best film and director to give it a leg up in Hollywood's race for Oscars. The film also won best original score for A R Rahman and best screenplay for Simon Beaufoy. Music maestro A.R. Rahman has become the first Indian to win the prestigious Golden Globe award for best original music score.

India yet to share Mumbai evidence: Interpol

Interpol Secretary General Ronald K. Noble told a news conference in Islamabad that India has given no information about last month's attacks in Mumbai to Interpol and information passed to media by Indian investigators should be shared if it is accurate. He further added that until Indian authorities shared information, police around the world would be unable to make any determination about the identity of the attackers.

PM arrives in Washington for G-20 summit

Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh arrived in Washington on Friday to attend the G-20 summit of world leaders on the financial crisis. The G-20 countries will hold meetings on Saturday. At the weekend, leaders of developed and emerging countries will seek to come up with solutions to arrest the global economic crisis that has plunged most of Europe into its first recession since the Euro currency was formed.

Indo-US nuke deal will not affect IPI

On Sunday visiting foreign minister Pranab Mukherjee assured Iran that India's nuclear deal with the US would in no way adversely impact a project to import Iranian gas via Pakistan. The United States is trying to isolate Iran over its disputed nuclear plans and has been urging other countries and companies not to do business with the Islamic Republic.

US and India sign nuclear deal

The United States and India on Friday signed the nuclear deal which will allow India to buy U.S. civil nuclear technology for the first time in three decades. The accord was signed by U.S. Secretary of State Condoleeza Rice and Indian External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee. The accord has reached after years of tortuous negotiations and criticism by non-proliferation advocates.

Panic spreads through Asia

Asian stocks plunged again on Friday. The yen rose as panic set in after global efforts so far failed to unlock credit markets. Investors doubted a meeting of the Group of Seven rich nations later on Friday could achieve much. Japan's Nikkei share average plunged nearly 12 per cent at one stage and was down 23 per cent for the week -- about twice what it suffered in the week of the 1987 crash.

Indian-American astronaut Sunita Williams returned home after a 195-day record space odyssey with space shuttle Atlantis making a smooth and safe landing at the Edwards Air Force Base, California. The shuttle with Williams and six astronauts returning from the International Space Station landed in California at 1:19 a.m IST on Saturday after aborting a bid to land at the Kennedy Space Centre, Florida due to bad weather.

Bush, Lula support bio-fuel

Bush, Lula agree to promote bio-fuel Brazil and the United States have agreed to co-operate in promoting biofuel, and expressed hope to work on the Doha Round of global trade talks. Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva and US President George W. Bush toured a biofuel facility of state energy company Petrobras. Lula announced a bilateral agreement and said the two countries should encourage other countries to diversify their energy sources. (ANI)

Prince Harry to serve in Iraq

Prince Harry, third in line to the British throne, is being deployed to Iraq, the British Ministry of Defence (MOD) said on Thursday.

A ministry spokesman said the Prince would be sent to Iraq with his "A" squadron of the Blues and Royals regiment "over the next few months" as part of the latest British troop rotation.

The 22-year-old, flame-haired prince had long stressed that if his unit goes into battle, he would want to be leading them. (ANI)

Rice visits Iraq, urges reconciliation

US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice made an unannounced visit to Baghdad on Saturday even as US and Iraqi troops make initial gains in an offensive seen as a final push to end sectarian bloodshed that threatens to tear Iraq apart.

Rice lauded early progress in a military operation against militants in Baghdad, but said Iraqis had to use this "breathing space" to push ahead with reconciliation.

Democrats vote against Bush

US House disapproves Bush Iraq policy

In a blow to US President George W Bush, the Democrat-controlled House of Representatives expressed its strong disapproval of his decision to deploy more than 20,000 United States combat troops to Iraq.

As many as 17 Republicans also joined Democrats in the House of Representatives to oppose the Iraq policy, which includes an increase in troops there, in a non-binding resolution.

The vote on the resolution was 246-182.

US welcomes N Korean nuke move

Washington: US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice said the North Korean nuclear disarmament agreement was a good first step in the process of disarming the country.

North Korea agreed to take steps toward nuclear disarmament under a ground-breaking deal that will bring the impoverished communist state some $300 million in aid.

Under the agreement,Pyongyang will freeze the reactor at the heart of its nuclear program and allow international inspections of the site.(ANI)

Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton expressed confidence that she can win the 2008 Democratic nomination.

Clinton is starting a three-day series of web chats with supporters this evening, and travels to Iowa, site of the first nominating caucuses, next weekend. "I want to have a conversation with our citizens about what we want for our country," Clinton said.

Clinton, speaking publicly on Sunday for the first time since declaring her candidacy on her website, said she is eager to begin campaigning. "It'll be a great contest," Clinton said.

Saddam Hussein, former Iraqi Pesident, was executed before 6 a.m Baghdad time (8:30 am IST) on December 30, 2006 - a dramatic end for a leader who ruled Iraq by force for three decades before the US invasion.

US President Bush said Saddam's execution was an important milestone on Iraq's path to democracy.

"Bringing Saddam Hussein to justice will not end the violence in Iraq, but it is an important milestone on Iraq's course to becoming a democracy that can govern, sustain, and defend itself," Bush said in a statement from his Texas ranch.
