'Make norms against book piracy more stringent'
Our Regional Bureau / Hyderabad April 16,2004
The norms against book piracy must become more stringent, said G S Sethi, director of English Edition. “Piracy is killing the industry. Books are reprinted with poor quality which affects customers and the market at large. The books, especially on information technology and computers, are the main targets for piracy,” he pointed out.

The Mumbai-based publishers and distributors, English Edition, yesterday opened a 10-day book fair ‘Festival of Books’ at YMCA here yesterday. “South India, in particular Hyderabad, has a healthy reading culture. That is the reason why the exhibition is being held here again this year,” Sethi said.

The book fair first came to the city seven years back. Initially, it used to be held annually but now it is being held three to four times a year. The exhibition, which has a collection of over one lakh titles in various fields, will be open till April 25. Customers can avail of discounts up to 60 per cent on select volumes, he said.

The company has annual sales of over Rs 6 crore. The company plans to expand its base to the rest of the country and also publish more books. The company has so far published over 80 books. The publications cover various fields like business, health, biographies and art. The book house also supplies books to Oxford Books, Higgin Bothams and Crossword.

According to Sethi, Crossword is their biggest customer with purchases of up to Rs 4 lakh per year. To a query, he said, “The Internet has not reduced the sale of the books in the open market.” Although it has made it easier for many, people still prefer to buy books in the open market, he added.
