Para-shooters have sought an urgent independent inquiry into alleged financial corruption, extortion and manipulation in the selection process for the Para Asian Games, prompting the Paralympic Committee of India (PCI) to reject the charges and insist that the team was picked entirely on merit.
In a representation to the Director General of the Sports Authority of India (SAI) on Wednesday, the shooters alleged "illicit monetary extortion", "brazen corruption" and violations of Sports Ministry's guidelines by PCI officials and its Shooting Technical Committee (STC) in selections for the Aichi-Nagoya Para Asian Games, scheduled from October 18 to 24.
The representation alleged that athletes were being pressured to pay a 20 per cent commission from government cash awards as a precondition for selection, while also accusing officials of manipulating international quota places and qualifying scores to favour certain shooters.

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has signed a new contract that is set to extend his stay at the English champions beyond a decade.
Arteta penned a deal that keeps him at Arsenal until 2030, the club said Wednesday.
The 44-year-old Spanish coach took charge in December 2019 and is now comfortably the longest-serving coach in the Premier League.
He led Arsenal to the league title last season to end the club's 22-year wait to be the champions of England again.
"We have already built a special bond and created memories that will last a lifetime," Arteta said in a club statement, "and what is so exciting is that this is only the beginning of what we can achieve together."
Arteta also played for Arsenal, spending the last five years of his career there.
"He has a deep understanding of Arsenal's values and carries them in his heart," Arsenal co-chairmen Stan and Josh Kroenke said.
"He knows what this club means to everyone connected to it and is committed to building on everything we have

European soccer leaders were gathering Wednesday with time pressing to find a candidate and shape their strategy for trying to oust Gianni Infantino as president of FIFA.
UEFA has called its 55 member federations to a previously scheduled summit Thursday in Berlin that arrives in the midst of European efforts to get a new leader for soccer's world body.
Infantino's divisive World Cup private investment plan - that failed within days of being revealed in July - pushed UEFA to act on long-standing mistrust of its former employee's increasingly executive presidency at FIFA.
UEFA's longer term plans include preparing a criminal complaint against Infantino in Switzerland for possible financial mismanagement in the World Cup sell-off deal, and has asked courts in the United States to authorize discovery of evidence.
"Somewhere along the way things went too far with FIFA, and we're looking to put things back where they belong," UEFA general secretary Theodore Theodoridis said last ...

Former Manchester City and Spain midfielder David Silva has come out of retirement after three years to join Supreme Sha Tin, the Hong Kong club announced Wednesday.
The 40-year-old Silva, a member of Spain's 2010 World Cup winning squad, ended his career in the summer of 2023 after sustaining a serious knee injury while in preseason training with Real Sociedad in Spain.
"I am delighted to join Supreme Sha Tin," Silva, who made 125 appearances for Spain, said in a video posted on the club's social media channels.
"I'm really looking forward to going to Hong Kong to enjoy the culture, the people, and the food in Sha Tin - and the football in Hong Kong, of course."
Supreme Sha Tin was promoted to the Hong Kong Premier League last season and is currently 8th in the 11-team competition.
"David Silva will be in Hong Kong soon to settle in, link up with squad training, and build up to peak match fitness before making his pitch debut," the club said.

The hard-fought win over arch-rivals Pakistan in the semifinal pumped the Indian men's hockey team in their dominant victory over Malaysia in the summit clash to clinch the Asian Games gold and book the 2028 Olympics berth, said head coach Craig Fulton here on Saturday.
Captain Harmanpreet Singh rose to the occasion with a brace as India thrashed Malaysia 5-1 to win the men's hockey gold for the second time in a row.
"We played a great game. We almost needed that semifinal (win) to get into this mindset," Fulton said after the summit calsh.
The nimble-footed Malaysians, who have always been a tricky opponent, created problems for India for stretches of the first half. India, however, played much better in the second half to impose themselves in the contest.
"I'm proud of the boys because on the first half's performance from Malaysia, they did really well. We stuck to our guns but they scored a world-class goal. Coming in 2-1, it was tight. And then our third quarter was immense and

Abhay Singh returned from the Asian Games with two medals but little satisfaction, with the Indian squash player particularly disappointed by the men's team's bronze, which he felt was a missed opportunity to defend their gold from the last edition.
There were no garlands, no bands and no loud celebrations as Abhay made a quiet exit from the airport, his subdued mood reflecting his disappointment despite winning silver in the men's individual event.
"I think the result in the individual event was understandable considering the strength of the opponent. However, I am quite disappointed with the team event result," Abhay told PTI.
"I genuinely believe we had the depth and quality to win the gold medal, but that is not how sports work. Hopefully, we can come back stronger and do one better next time."

Wicketkeeper batter Sanju Samson asserted India did not get the Asian Games gold 'on a platter', and said fielding experienced A-list players helped the team manage the pressures of a high-octane final against Pakistan.
India defeated arch-rivals Pakistan by 19 runs to defend their men's cricket gold at the continental showpiece here on Saturday.
"We had a very experienced team. That's where the experience of experienced players comes in. We knew how to manage our energy, how to keep ourselves motivated and focused even when practices were not happening and matches were not happening," Samson said after the match.
India's decision to bring their regular T20 contingent ensured they had the firepower and composure to handle the occasion.
"Bringing the 'A' team really helped, and that's what happened against Pakistan in the final. I think it was a proper game for everyone," he added.

Riding on Samir Zeljkovic's solitary strike, Mohun Bagan Super Giant retained the IFA Shield with a hard-fought 1-0 victory over arch-rivals East Bengal in a fiercely contested Kolkata Derby at the Vivekananda Yuba Bharati Krirangan here on Thursday.
Bosnian midfielder Zeljkovic scored the decisive goal in the 45th minute, converting shortly before the interval to give the Mariners their 22nd IFA Shield title.
This is the 22nd time that Mohun Bagan claimed the prestigious tournament and after nearly five decades that they have won the Calcutta Football League (CFL) and IFA Shield in same season. Last time they achieved the feat, late PK Banerjee was the coach in the year 1976.
It was far from a fluent performance from either side, but Mohun Bagan looked considerably more assured than they had in the Durand Cup final earlier this season, when East Bengal had inflicted a 4-1 defeat on their city rivals.

European soccer body UEFA has detailed the kind of FIFA president it wants to replace Gianni Infantino - "a respected and unifying figure, deeply rooted in football."
A candidate that "represents FIFA globally and provides leadership without exercising management functions," UEFA said on Thursday after a meeting of its 55 member federations that shaped a strategy to find an opponent for Infantino before a Nov. 18 deadline.
Exactly who that candidate could be was not discussed on Thursday, though it will not be UEFA president Aleksander Ceferin and potentially also not be European in the search for global votes among 211 FIFA member federations.
Ceferin did use the meeting to confirm he will stand for re-election for a fourth and final term. The decision was expected despite Ceferin saying in 2024 he would not be a candidate at the next election, which is scheduled for April 22 in Astana, Kazakhstan.

Erling Haaland called on everybody at Manchester City to "stick together" in the striker's first public comments since the club was found guilty of large-scale financial rule-breaking in the Premier League.
City manager Enzo Maresca also spoke for the first time about English soccer's biggest modern-day scandal, expressing his "trust" in the club's ownership and saying his players "don't care too much about the noise."
City will play Liverpool on Sunday in its first match since the publication of an investigatory panel's verdict that City artificially inflated its revenue by more than $1 billion from 2009-18 to circumvent financial fair-play rules that restricted rival clubs in that period.
City was found guilty by the panel of all 80 of the serious financial charges brought by the Premier League and could be hit with severe sanctions - including being expelled from the top flight. City has lodged an appeal against the findings.

Cristiano Ronaldo returned to club soccer action on Friday after a controversial international break with Portugal and scored the opening goal as Al-Nassr beat Diriyah 3-0 in the Saudi Pro League.
The victory put the defending champions level on points behind leader Al-Qadsiah on goal difference in the eighth round.
During the international window, the 41-year-old Ronaldo walked out of the Portugal squad, for which he has scored 146 goals in 234 appearances.
In a long statement posted on Tuesday, Ronaldo said recently hired coach Jorge Jesus hadn't been true to his word about when he would play the striker in the Nations League.
Ronaldo won the Saudi Arabia title in May with Jesus as Al-Nassr coach and opened the scoring on Friday midway through the first half.

The Confederation of African Football is reappraising its decision to hold the Africa Cup of Nations every four years, CAF president Patrice Motsepe declared on Friday when he added his organization did not take orders from FIFA or UEFA.
Motsepe, who last December announced the biennial Africa Cup would switch to a four-year cycle from 2028, said on Friday that it was "nonsense, absolute rubbish" that CAF was being dictated to by either the world or European governing body.
The decision at the time, bringing the competition to a schedule that aligned with FIFA's international calendar, rankled many at the Africa Cup in Morocco, with some saying it was made with European wishes at heart to the detriment of African interests.
Motsepe, a South African billionaire who is also a vice-president of FIFA, appeared stung by the criticism.
