In a rapidly changing world where technological advancements and population boom have put severe stress on the world environment, it is crucial that companies start preparing today for future. By 2020 many significant changes will impact the way companies work and do business, said Pradeep Banerjee, chairman, CII Environment for Business Sub-Committee & executive director, Hindustan Unilever Ltd, while addressing the CII conference ‘Go green: Sustainable supply chain’ on August 27, 2015.
Companies have to look at environmental issues as part of day to day operations for ensuring sustainable growth. “There is need for companies to adopt a fourth dimension of growth, ie ‘Responsible growth’ to the existing three dimensional growth model of social, economic and environmental growth. As this growth model is here to stay and that companies who wish survive in a dynamic business environment must adhere to it,” opined Banerjee.
Historically, Indian companies have outsourced social & environmental growth to the government and have only focused on technological and economic growth, but experts now believe that companies have to be more responsible and look at overall growth. “The concept of driving the green agenda is mainly through the supplier base. India’s journey on green has been a delightful one and CII has played an important role in this Green Revolution,” informed Pradeep Bhargava, past chairman, CII WR & director, Cummins Ltd.

Both large and small companies need to collectively adopt green processes. Speaking on the GreenCo, green company rating system launched in 2011 which captures the wholeness on a company’s journey in going green, Bhargava indicated the creation of a separate green code for MSME’s and concluded by urging the companies to be compliant to environmental standards.
According to Dr Arup Basu, chairman, CII Maharashtra State Council & president & CTO, New Businesses & Innovation Centre, Tata Chemicals Ltd, sustainability will play a more relevant role in the days to come. “Working in an interdependent world, the importance of being eco-friendly, going green; adopting a green eco-friendly supply chain cannot be underlined. Tata Chemicals has partnered with other large and small companies to make its supply chain processes green collaboratively,” stated Dr Basu.
