Scott and Navarro strike it big

DIVOTS

The newly formed team of Adam Scott and Tony Navarro helped the young Australian win his third PGA title since August 2003. Navarro has taken over as Scott's caddy after Scott let his previous caddy, Alistair McLean, go earlier this year.

Navarro was offered to Scott by the legendary Greg Norman, who himself has decided to cut down on his schedule. And that for Scott has turned out to be a great decision as he has had problems finding a long-term caddy.

Meanwhile, Navarro will be back with Norman for one week at the Cialis Western Open and then return to Scott, who won the Booz Allen Classic for a cheque of US $ 810,000, which moved him to fifth on the Money List for the year.

Monty makes it

Veteran Colin Montgomerie played 38 holes on a tough day at Sunningdale before he secured his placed in the British Open Championships at Troon next week.

The Scot, who had slipped out of top 50 in the world, was required to qualify for the Major being held in hometown course in Ayrshire gave a terrific performance as he came through the second extra hole of a 12-man play-off during International Final Qualifying at the Berkshire Course.

The play-off was a 12-man affair for the last six places and did not begin until after 8pm. Montgomerie made it through at the second extra hole along with Eduardo Romero, Maarten Lafeber, Peter Hedblom, Marten Olander and Warren Bennett.

Monty, who has been beset with personal problems and a broken marriage, was upset as he played to six-under 137 (68, 69) and was disturbed during his putting in the second round. He waited for three hours before learning he had made the play-off.

Tiger, butch patch up

Tiger Woods picked up the phone and spoke to Butch Harmon, just as he had said he would. Woods called up Harmon to discuss the criticisms the latter had made during a commentary stint at the US Open.

Harmon said Woods might be in a "bit of denial" over the state of his game. The two split after Harmon modeled the swing that won seven of 11 Majors in one stretch.

Woods has not won a Major since the 2002 US Open. Woods said, "We talked about every single conceivable issue and point of view that each of us had, perception-wise. Sometimes things can be spun out of hand ... and I wanted to hear it from his mouth and he wanted to hear it from my mouth. We talked about it for a while. And things are certainly much better than they were before."
