Cairn India says production unaffected by labourers clash

Press Trust of India Jaipur

Amid clashes between two groups of labourers near its Mangla oil fields in Barmer, Cairn India today said production and crude oil transportation at Mangla site in Barmer continued without any interruption.

"The construction work and other activities at the Mangla are going on at a normal pace. Around 30-35 tankers are moving out daily, and Cairn has aimed to touch 30,000 barrels per day production rate within two weeks since the Prime Minister Manmohan Singh dedicated the terminal," a Cairn India corporate communication official said.

"Oil production was 900 barrel when the Prime Minister inaugurated it on August 29," he said, adding it was gradually picking up.

There was a clash between two group of labourers from Bihar and Rajasthan at a construction site at Mangla area in which a few labourers were injured, the police said.

Of the 9,000 labourers, 6,000 are estimated to be from outside the state, including Bihar. Local MP Colonel Sonaram and MLA representing the area have demanded that locals should be given priority on jobs.

After two days of negotiations involving labourers, contractors and the police administration, the issue was resolved last night, the police said.

Labourers' demands like local bus service, their security, police verification and compensation to those injured were agreed, the police said.
