Corex, the cough syrup brand of Pfizer, is all set to become the first Indian pharmaceutical brand to touch an annual turnover of Rs 100 crore.

According to the IMS Health data for April 2001-March 2002, the moving annual turnover (MAT) of Corex has already touched Rs 93.73 crore. "Going by Corex's current audited sales and growth figures in IMS, it is likely to cross the Rs 100 crore mark during the current year," a Pfizer spokesperson said. According to Pfizer officials, Corex has been growing at 12 per cent annually.

Going by the IMS figures, Corex and Becosules, both from the Pfizer stable, have inter-changeably been the number 1 and number 2 brands in the country for several years. "At Pfizer, there has always been an emphasis on brand building and hence it is hardly surprising that two leading brands come from our stables," said the spokesperson.

"We also have the highest sales-to-product ratio and the highest brand efficiency per product among all the leading pharma companies," said the Pfizer spokesperson. Though Corex is number one in terms of value of sales, it ranks 16 in terms of volume with 3.8 crore units during the year, according to IMS.

Among the leading pharma brands, Becosules (including Becosules plus) recorded a MAT of Rs 85.19 crore from April 2001-March 2002 and ranked second in value. Taxim from Alkem Laboratories ranked third with a turnover of Rs 82.32 crore and Voveran from Novartis ranked number 4 with a turnover of Rs 75.11 crore.

Anacin that sold 19.2 crore units during the year ranked the highest in terms of the number of units sold but 178 in terms of volume with a turnover of Rs 14.9 crore. Deriphyllin sold 11.2 crore units and ranked second in terms of volume, but 53 in value. Combiflam of Aventis sold 8 crore units during the year and ranked number three in terms of volume and 17 in terms of value.
