Samsung Electronics Plan Cdma Handsets

Samsung Electronics Company, the $27 billion Korean giant, will start manufacturing CDMA (code division multiple access) handsets once the demand in India reaches the optimum level.

Samsung India Electronics (SEIL) managing director Sang Suk Lee said the company had arrangements with a handful of Indian CDMA technology providers for supply of Korean made handsets.

The global giant, which runs business in the country through its subsidiaries namely SEIL and Samsung India Information and Telecommunications (SEIIT), has supply arrangements with some mobile companies including Bharat Sanchar Nigam, Tata Teleservices and Shyam Telecom.

He said SEIIT was in talks with Reliance Industries for supply of CDMA handsets. Samsung is the world's largest CDMA handset maker with over 31 per cent share of the global market, sources said. The company has four line of businesses -- digital media, home appliances, semi conductors and information technology & telecommunications. Of $27.2 billion turnover, these divisions contribute 27 per cent, 22 per cent, 8 per cent and 38 per cent, respectively.
