Tigerair, the Singapore-based low cost airline, has made its maiden foray in the North India market by launching a direct Lucknow-Singapore flight.

The non-stop service will be operated thrice every week between the two cities.

Tigerair, which has been operating in India for the last eight years, has been connecting South India destinations viz. Chennai, Kochi, Hyderabad, Tiruchipalli and Bangalore. Lucknow is the sixth Indian destination connected by Tigerair.

"We selected Lucknow as the starting point in North India since Uttar Pradesh and Lucknow have lots of advantages. It has a large population base and an expanding middle class with rising disposable income," company's director (sales and marketing) Teh Yikchuan said here today.

He said the Lucknow-Singapore flight would look at capitalising on the leisure, tourism and business travel between the two cities. The flight would take a little more than five hrs for the travel.

Besides, Lucknow is projected to function as a catchment for getting tourists from other neighbouring cities and states. The inaugural one way and two way fares for Lucknow-Singapore flights have been kept at Rs 5,399 and Rs 10,999 respectively.

The maiden flight reached Lucknow yesterday from Singapore. Tigerair currently operates 45 weekly flights in India.

Replying to a Business Standard query, Yikchuan said the company would definitely look at expanding its services to more Indian towns depending upon the potential, but it could not be disclosed at present.

He said Tigerair would explore other tier II towns in India to launch operations in the future.
