Our Bureau BUSINESS STANDARD

Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) will increase the number of professionals at its Chennai centre to 10,000 from 7,000 this year, Ravi Shah, vice-president, told reporters here today.

Shah, a 27-year veteran in TCS, recently took charge of the company's operations in Chennai. He succeeds S Mahalingam, who is now the chief financial officer.

TCS has also leased a 150,000 square feet facility in the city from SSI Ltd. The facility, which will house a new development centre with around 2,000 employees, will be occupied early next month.

The new location, which is on a two-three year lease, will only be an interim arrangement until the new centre in Siruseri is fully functional.

"The Chennai operations account for 35 to 37 per cent of the total turnover of TCS. We propose to retain this leadership position among all centres of TCS in India," Shah said, adding that the Sholinganallur facility of the branch was awarded the ISO 14001 certification which confirms that TCS has a well-established environment management system.

Defining the roadmap for TCS' Chennai operations, Shah said, "As part of growth plan for Chennai, we propose to acquire 5 to 7 large customer relationships in the next one year."

Close to 45 per cent of TCS' income from Chennai operations comes from banking, financial services and insurance sector. Shah expects this trend to continue in the future.

Some of TCS' high-end customers include GE, H-P, Bank of America, Barclay, Visa, Standard Charted Bank, Prudential and AIG.

Referring to the recent joint venture signed between AIG and Polaris, Shah said, though some of its business from AIG has been routed to Polaris, there was no cause for concern and that AIG is very happy with TCS' service.
