The Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health has opened a centre in Mumbai to forge collaborations to improve health in India and around the world.
The Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health’s new cente is the first in South Asia. The centre would be formally launched on December 20.
The center is housed at Piramal Tower Annexe and the space has been provided through a charitable contribution by the husband-wife duo of Ajay Piramal and Swati Piramal, both Harvard alumni.
Swati Piramal graduated from Harvard’s School of Public Health in 1992 and is the vice chairperson of Piramal Enterprises Ltd. (formerly known as Piramal Healthcare).
Ajay Piramal, is a graduate of Harvard Business School and the Chairman of the Piramal Group, a diversified conglomerate focusing on pharmaceuticals, packaging, financial services, and real estate, which has a presence in 100 countries around the world.
Harvard Business School already has an India Research Center in Mumbai since 2006. The school in 2012 also opened a classroom at five-star hotel Taj Lands End in suburban Mumbai.
Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health has had active research and educational programs in India since the 1960s, but not an established physical office or centre until now.
Harvard Chan School’s Acting Dean David Hunter said, "We believe the new Mumbai center will enable us to establish new collaborations and expand existing partnerships to increase the number of trained public health professionals and researchers in India, and to help strengthen the leadership of public health officials in central and state governments as well as private health-sector organizations."
