There is a need to build a military industrial complex as the country moves forward to achieve self-reliance in defence requirements, said scientific advisor to the Defence Minister and secretary, Department of Defence R&D, Avinash Chander on Saturday .

The efforts to achieve self-reliance as well as to make gains for the country's economy out of this endeavour would require more participation and collaboration from the private industrial sector, according to him.

Delivering a lecture on the future goals of Indian defence establishment here, Chander said the country needed a military industrial complex comprising Tier 2 and 3 level vendors for the kind of work that lie ahead.

"Our weapons are globally competitive today for their performance and the costs are 50-60 per cent lower for any weapon that is produced in India," he said explaining the various programmes under way at the DRDO, headed by him.
