AP urges Power Grid to set up 765-Kv substations

BS Reporter Chennai/ Hyderabad

The Andhra Pradesh government has urged Power Grid Corporation of India Limited (PGCIL) to expedite the construction of 765-Kv substations and extra high tension (EHT) lines for importing power to the state from northern, eastern and western regions, stating this would give relief to the power-starved southern states.

The transmission corridor has become one of the major challenges for meeting abnormal demand for power in the state. Keeping this in view, the state government has decided to pursue with PGCIL to expedite the ongoing transmission projects with the latest technology of gas-insulated 765-kv substations and EHT lines in south, particularly in AP, with an investment of Rs 6,000 crore by the end of the next financial year.

“The top officials of the state power sector had recently visited New Delhi and pursued for improving the transmission corridor availability to southern states. Power generation in gas-based projects has been badly affected due to unprecedented shortage of natural gas. Besides, the utilities have not been able to import required power from other regions due to the problem of the transmission corridor, which ultimately forced discoms to impose power restrictions in the state,” said M Sahoo, principal secretary, energy department.

PGCIL is expected to add considerable additional capacity of transmission corridor to Andhra Pradesh by 2013-14, he said in a press release on Sunday.
