G Singa Rao BUSINESS STANDARD

The cement consumption has crossed the 10 million tonne mark for the first time in Andhra Pradesh during the financial year 2000-03, with an 18 per cent growth over the previous year.

The growth in consumption, despite the drought impact across the state, has come through a hectic activity in housing construction and laying of cement roads in rural areas under the Food for Work programme.

The ongoing highway expansion works, covering a total length of over 1,000 km in the state, has also resulted in higher consumption of cement.

All the major, mini and non-local companies engaged in the cement marketing in the state put together despatched 10.38 million tonnes of cement during the year as against a despatch figure of 8.82 million tonnes during 2001-02.

The growth in cement consumption in the state is higher than that in other southern states and also the national average.

Cement consumption went up by 9 per cent in Tamil Nadu, 16 per cent in Karnataka, 17 per cent in Kerala and 9 per cent on all India basis during the financial year 2002-03.

Andhra Pradesh recorded the highest growth in cement consumption for the second year in succession. During 2001-02, cement consumption in the state went up by 25.68 per cent at 8.82 million tonnes, as against 7 million tonees in the preceding year.
