Chemical Weapon Convention sees positive response

Amidst reports that mandatory declaration of chemicals used in manufacturing products may not have gone down well with the Gujarat chemical industry, the Indian Chemical Council (ICC), Gujarat, has stated that the Chemical Weapon Convention (CWC) held at Vadodara on Tuesday has seen a positive response.

Under a law of CWC, which came into force from July 1, 2005, through a United Nation's Charter, all manufacturers have to mandatorily declare the chemicals to which most of the countries across the world are signatory except six-seven like Angola, Egypt, Iraq, North Korea and Somalia.

Through the convention, which marked its tenth anniversary on April 29 this year and held in India on behalf of the Ministry of Chemical & Fertilisers and National Authority, CWC, the Gujarat council intended to spread awareness about gains of such declaration.

YP Saxena, secretary, ICC-Gujarat, said, "The response from the chemical industry this time has been positive and the authorities were satisfied by the awareness created among the industry players by ICC Gujarat. Till now, the industry was sceptical of such declarations fearing leakage of confidential information."
