With the crucial election to Kolkata Municipal Corporation slated for next month, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee today said the KMC, run by the Trinamool Congress, had taken measures to improve amenities for the citizens. "We are doing everything after discussions. Many things were in a lacklustre state. We are completing them," Banerjee said at a programme of the KMC at Topsia in the eastern part of the city.

"We beautified the Kolkata river front, gave shape to Kolkata Eye (Modelled on London Eye), set up the Eco Tourism Park, restored Town Hall (a heritage building) in the city", Banerjee said. Claiming that the problem of waterlogging in the city has been minimised to a good extent, Banerjee said, "Waterlogging used to be a big problem. After this corporation came into being, accumulated water is getting removed within hours."

"Kolkata is now a clean city. It is cleaned three times a day," she said. "Drinking water supply system for Jadavpur, Tangra, Dhapa is now in place. The same has been done in Chetla, Behala and Joka", she said. "We allotted Rs 30 crore for Bantala to finish the Leather Complex. There is leather industry besides IT industry. Pollution is absent," she said.

KMC had done numerous works for burial ground and burning ghats in all round the city, she added.

The state government has asked the State Election Commissioner to hold KMC election on April 18, and to 93 municipalities across the state on April 25. Election to KMC and the 93 other civic bodies are being considered the biggest polls before the Assembly elections next year.
