CPCB slams court notice on GMR Energy

BS Reporter Kolkata/ Raipur

Chhattisgarh Pollution Conservation Board (CPCB) had filed a petition in the court with a plea to register offence against top executives of GMR Energy Limited for allegedly starting the construction work of its proposed power plant without getting the required environment clearances.

The action came following the complaint filed with the board against the company for reportedly starting the civil work at its proposed power plant site. The GMR Energy is setting up a 1200-Mw power plant in Raikheda village near Tilda about 30 km from here.

"A team from the board visited the spot and inspected the site to establish that the company had executed some small construction works in the proposed area," Regional Officer of CPCB R K Sharma said. Based on the report, the board on October 29 filed a petition in the court of Chief Judicial Magistrate (CJM) in Raipur.

In the petition, the board had pleaded to register offence against Chairman of GMR Energy B V Nageswara Rao and Vice President Anil Jain for violating the environment protection norms."The court would decide on the petition later to register a case against the company," Sharma said.

Officials in the board said that the public hearing for the environment clearances of the project was successfully held in January this year.
