Displaced people return in Nandigram

Press Trust of India Nandigram

A total of 150 people, displaced due to the recent violence at Nandigram, today returned home in Gokulnagar and Maheshpur areas escorted by police and the CRPF.

"The decision to send them home with adequate security was taken at a meeting convened by the district magistrate, the BDO and the affected people last night," BDO Shantiram Gorai told newsmen today. "All 150 men had taken refuge along with several others at a make-shift tent behind the BDO's office ever since clashes erupted in trouble-torn Nandigram in the run up to the May 11 panchayat polls.  The CRPF and the police will patrol the areas to ensure that the people who returned home were not disturbed," he added.

Meanwhile, a Trinamool Congress leader claimed that some supporters of Bhumi Uchched Pratirodh Committee were beaten at Keyakhali area today. CPI (M) MP and chairman of the Haldia Development Authority Laxman Seth was yesterday heckled by BUPC activists at Bajkul when he was on his way to Patashpur to address a public gathering.
