DMK president M Karunanidhi yesterday said the party would never indulge in any activities that would harm the unity of the United Front government at the Centre.

Karunanidhi told a press conference here that he would not insist on his compromise formula on the admission of Laloo Prasad Yadavs Rashtriya Janata Dal if it harmed the front unity.

The unity of the front was of paramount importance. The front was formed on the basic principle of waging a war against corruption and communalism and he would not take any action which would harm the front, Karunanidhi said.

He would meet the CPI-M general secretary, Harkishan Singh Surjeet, in New Delhi before the UF steering committee meeting on July 25 to discuss his formula, he said.

Karunandihi, who had issued a statement last week threatening to withdraw the four DMK ministers from the UF ministry, said his compromise formula had brought about a much needed debate on the front and he was happy about it.

His compromise formula was only to break the impasse in the front, created by a small issue which was blown out of proportion.

Asked how it was possible for the three RJD ministers to continue in the government without the party being admitted to the front, Karunanindhi said there were no charges of corruption against them and they could continue.

Moreover the government had been formed with their support. He said the views of senior leaders like Harkishan Singh Surjeet, the CPI general secretary, A B Bardhan, and the TMC president, G K Moopanar, all of whom had vast experience in the national politics, could not be ignored.

He said a give and take approach should be adopted to deal with the issues relating to the front.
