Gem, jewellery exports decline by 19.11% in Feb

The current economic slowdown has impacted gem and jewellery exports with their overall exports declining by 19.11 per cent to Rs 5,911.74 crore in February 2009 as compared to Rs 7,308.30 crore (in rupee terms) in the same period last year, according to provisional statistics released by the Gem & Jewellery Export Promotion Council (GJEPC) here.
The overall exports of gems & jewellery at $1,221.43-million (in dollar terms) in February has shown a decline of 34.57 per cent as compared to $1,866.74 million in the same period of the previous year, GJEPC said.
Manufactured exports declined by 45.74 per cent in dollar terms in February 09 when compared to the same period last year. In rupee terms, there is a decline of 33.32 per cent in net manufacturing exports during this period.
During the period April 08 to February 09, the overall exports of gems & jewellery stood at $17,791.40 million is showing a decline of 4.62 per cent as compared to $18,653.63 million of same period previous year.
However, overall exports of gems and jewellery in rupee terms gained by 5.65 per cent at Rs 79,403-crore during April 08 to February 09 as compared to Rs 75,155.46 crore in the same period last year.
