Kenya seeks help to emulate its model
A Kenyan team is doing a study on e-governance initiatives undertaken by the transport department

The Government of Kenya has sought the assistance of the Punjab government and its agencies for automating its road transport sector. A team from Kenya is here, doing a study to improvise and implement a transport integrtated management system in their country based on the Punjab model.
The team is doing a study on e-governance initiatives undertaken by the transport department so that it could be replicated in Kenya. The team led by Francis Meja, registrar of motor vehicles, Kenya, said the Punjab transport department has gone from leaps and bounds in the field of e-governance and citizen services delivery.
He said the Kenyan government would like to replicate the Punjab system for online application of road sector documents such as driving licenses and motor vehicle registration certificates. They have also expressed desire to replicate the centralised data of the transport sector. The Kenyan government has also sought assistance for issuance of smart drivers’ licenses and motor vehicle number plates in time-bound manner.
It is worth mentioning that the introduction of e-governance in the department has enabled Punjab to become a leading state in the country to simultaneously introduce smart card facility for driving licenses and certificate registration of vehicles, along with introduction of other citizen convenience services for facilities like learner licence issuance by college principals, web-based anywhere/anytime payment of taxes and fee for vehicle owners and an online system for vehicle registration at dealer point.
