Malaysia to sign MoU with India

MoU on migrant workers

Press Trust of India Kuala Lampur

Malaysian Human Resources Minister Dr S. Subramaniam said Kuala Lumpur would soon appoint a labour attache at the Malaysian High Commission office in Chennai to look into the recruitment of workers.

India's Communications and IT minister A Raja, who was in Malaysia earlier this week, had held talks with Subramaniam and other senior ministers here and the issue of the MoU had come up.

Subramaniam said he had assured the Indian government that its citizens would be treated well and given the same rights as other workers, local Tamil daily 'Tamil Nanban' said.

The MoU is likely to benefit unskilled and semi-skilled Indian workers. The Malaysian minister added that local skills development centres run by his ministry and leading technical and skills training institutes in India would collaborate in training Indian workers to become skilled and semi-skilled.

He said that with this arrangement, Malaysia would be able to source only skilled workers from India, Tamil Nanban added.

There have been frequent reports of agents living Indians stranded in the country or the migrants being forced to work for low wages under difficult conditions.
