Passenger car sales for the month of June 2001 skid 11 per cent to 48,243 as compared to 54,202 during May 2001, according to figures made available by the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (Siam).
If multi-utility vehicles were bunched with cars, sales has dropped 12.5 per cent from May to June 2001.
Sales of all commercial vehicles, on the other hand, increased 31.9 per cent from May 2001 at 8,294 units to 10,937 units in June, driven by a 35.6 per cent growth in sales of medium and heavy commercial vehicles. Sales of LCVs, however, declined 21.2 per cent.

As per the Siam release, sales of two-wheelers (scooters, motorcycles and mopeds) declined 3.6 per cent from 3,36,180 units in May 2001 to 3,24,187 units in June 2001. Motorcycle sales were down by 7.2 per cent and that of scooters by 9.3 per cent. Sales of mopeds however increased by 35.4 per cent.
Among car-makers, Maruti Udyog showed the maximum decline at 18.8 per cent. Its sales in June 2001 stood at 26,129 units as againt the previous months 32,176. Sales of Daewoo stood at 2,033 (2,340 in May), Ford at 2,993 (3,475), General Motors 585 (623) and Mercedes 143 (173).
However, Hyundai improved its position from 8,134 units in May to 8,472 in June. Fiat India
