Rs 80 crore seed subsidy released

Our Bureau Chennai/ Bangalore
The Karnataka government has released a subsidy amount of Rs 80 crore towards supply of seeds to farmers. The seeds will be distributed at subsidised rate from June 5 onwards through 'Raitha Samparka Kendras.'

Announcing this at a news conference here on Thursday, agriculture minister Bandeppa Kashampure pointed out that the seeds will be distributed only to small and marginal land holders.

"This year, there is a demand for 3.59 lakh quintals of seeds for various crops. We have procured a major portion of it," he added.

The government has targetted production of 115 lakh tonne foodgrains this year.

"Last year, we faced problems in procuring fertilisers owing to an increase in their rates in the international market. This year, 115 lakh tonnes of DPA fertiliser is required across the state and the government is negotiating with the IFFCO for procurement," the minister stated.
