The Telangana government today asked the pipe manufacturers to set up their units locally as the government was planning to build 126,000-kilometre long pipeline under the proposed water grid project.

State panchayat raj minister KT Rama Rao today held a meeting with 60-odd pipe manufacturers hailing from different parts of the country to discuss the project details with them.

The government recently said that it was going to take up the project at an estimated cost of Rs 27,000 crore and will earmark adequate funds to this programme in the current year's budget itself.

The minister told the companies that the water grid works would start simultaneously in nine districts of Telangana as it wanted to supply drinking water to all the villages in the next three-and-a-half years.

Some of the companies wanted the government to award the project on a turn-key basis to avoid any issues pertaining to coordination and maintenance, according to a statement issued by the government. The pipe manufacturers also submitted their proposals to the government, it said.
