Uf Partners Pin Survival Hopes On Better Ties

Sensing that a belligerent Congress may spell doom for the United Front (UF) government, some front leaders are veering round to the view that a better coordination with the Congress should be maintained, whoever be its leader.

The idea was mooted by West Bengal Chief Minister Jyoti Basu in his controversial interview to an English daily. He is reported to have said that, since the Centre was surviving on the Congress support, there was nothing wrong in promoting a better coordination with it. The matter is expected to be discussed in the next UF steering committee. Janata Dal working president Sharad Yadav said that the decision on much matters should be collective and it was up to the steering committee to take up the matter.

 

Recently, Congress Working Committee member A K Antony said that although the Congress had extended an unconditional support to the UF government, it should consult the Congress on major policy matters.According to a PTI report from Mumbai, railway minister Ram Vilas Paswan has said that the UF government faced no threats from the developments in Congress party.

Asked about Congress review of support after Kesari becoming the CPP leader, he said, As things stand, there is no indication of any threat to the government.

CPI (M) general secretary H S Surjeet asserted that there would be no threat to the front government in view of the developments.
