Re up by 21 paise to 47.28 a $

The Indian rupee today opened strong by 21 paise against the dollar on expectations of good capital inflow from foreign funds in the domestic equity markets amid a weak $ overseas.

In active trade at Interbank Foreign  Exchange (forex) market, the domestic currency gained 21 paise to quote at 47.28 in early trade. It had ended up seven paise at 47.49 yesterday.

Forex dealers said a weak greenback overseas and expectations of capital inflow in equities, which may open in the positive territory following Asian cues, buoyed on the rupee sentiment.

The BSE benchmark Sensex had closed up 461.08 (3.14%) at 15,127 points yesterday after Prime Minister Manmohan Singh's optimistic economic growth estimates enlivened the markets.

 

Meanwhile in early trade today, Hong Kong's Hang Seng was trading 1 per cent up and Japan's Nikkei is quoting stronger by 1.5 per cent.
