The Fourth Dimension

BSCAL

Ever since RV Gupta retired as a deputy governor of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) in the middle of 1997, the post of the fourth deputy governor has been vacant. All of a sudden, there seems to be a race to occupy the vacant chair. According to unconfirmed reports, two prominent persons in the capital are being seriously considered for the post. One is Arvind Virmani, currently senior economic adviser in the finance ministry, and the other is Rakesh Mohan, who is with government think-tank the National Council for Applied Economic Research and author of the governments report on infrastructure. And though the appointment will be made only after the new government takes over, a few more may join the race in the intervening period. Watch this space for more news.
