Uco Bank Ed Sridhar Ahead In Race For Nhb Chairman

UCO Bank executive director V Sridhar is the top contender in the race for the post of National Housing Bank (NHB) chairman with the finance ministry recommending his candidature to the appointments committee of cabinet (ACC).
Official sources said that a panel of three names headed by Sridhar was cleared by finance minister Yashwant Sinha last week and sent for ACC approval. The others on the panel are Industrial Development Bank of India (IDBI) executive director J N Godbole and Vijaya Bank executive director Michael Bastion.
The post has been lying vacant since P P Vora joined as IDBI chairman and managing director in September 2001.

The selection committee which interviewed six candidates for the post had also recommended the same set of names and had put Sridhar as the top choice.
Small Industries Development Bank of India (Sidbi) executive director P R Das, Oriental Bank of Commerce executive director V K Chopra and Allahabad Bank executive director K Krishna Rai were the other candidates who were interviewed by the selection panel which among others included S K Purkayastha, additional secretary in the financial sector division of finance ministry and Reserve Bank of India deputy governor.
