HR guru advises focus on long term growth

Our Bureau Kolkata
Chief executives in India should be more concerned about the long term vision and should not carried away by the quarterly syndrome, feels T V Rao, the chairman of T V Rao Learning Systems and former senior faculty of IIM Ahmedabad.

He was in Kolkata to conduct a workshop on '360 degree feedback'.

Rao complained that most Indian CEOs lacked interest in human resource development and building manpower resources in their organisation.

"Recently, an industry body organised a workshop on 360 degree feedback. Most of the CEOs sent their HR people though they should have attended the meeting," he said.

According to Rao, the quarterly filing of results and other compliances have made CEOs far too conscious about short term goals.

"CEOs are excessively sensitive about quarterly turnover or quarterly profits. This is a part of life and should be treated as such. CEOs should be guided by a long term vision," he said.

Rao said businessmen like Azim Premzi, G D Birla or Jamsetji Tata shared a common trait.

"One thing is common in them that they all had a long term vision. Unless you have a long term vision you cannot succeed," he added.

The former IIM Ahmedabad faculty said most CEOs now did not care to know what impact they had on their employees.
