David Fincher's thriller 'Gone Girl' surpasses 'Annabelle' at weekend box office with $38M earnings

David Fincher's latest thriller 'Gone Girl' has topped the weekend box office by beating 'Annabelle' with 38 million dollar earnings.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the R-rated adult drama, which is based on Gillian Flynn's novel of the same name, has become the top opening of Fincher's career and one of the best showings for Ben Affleck.

'Annabelle', a prequel to box-office hit 'The Conjuring' grossed 37.2 million dollars, followed by 'The Equalizer' with 18 million dollar earnings, while the weekend's other new nationwide offering, Nicolas Cage's faith-based thriller, 'Left Behind', placed No. 6 for the weekend with 6.9 million dollars.
