The jury in the trial of Indian-origin doctor Jayant Patel's decision on the course of surgery on a cancer patient is locked in standoff over verdict and will continue to pursue after investigating further evidence.

The jury of the former Bundaberg surgeon Patel has asked for a transcript of the evidence of one of the witness, a doctor.

According to news.com.au, Patel, 63, has been accused of causing grievous bodily harm to patient Ian Vowles in 2004 while treating him for aggressive colon cancer.

Vowles, 66, requires a colostomy bag for life and suffers fatigue and impotence.

The report said that Patel's defence team says Vowles had a family history of colon cancer and the operation guaranteed him a cancer free future.
