People in the northeast recently celebrated their New Year with enthusiasm and gaiety. Different tribes and communities observed the day in their own unique ways, but sent out a common message of peace and harmony for all.

The Manipuri New Year or Cheirabo symbolizes prosperity. Thousands of people, irrespective of their age, cast and creed, come out of their homes to celebrate the day by climbing the hills as part of a ritual, believing that it would take them to a new high in life.

Special dishes prepared on the occasion are first offered to the deities. People offer prayers with a belief that life will take a positive turn.

This year, the thought uppermost in their minds was peace and an end to violence in the state, which has made life difficult.

Ranbir Singh, a local resident, said: "On the occasion of the Cheiraoba Festival, we climb the hill, and I am so happy. There is peace in Manipur. On this occasion, we pray to God to bring more peace and harmony in the region."

Suresh, another local, said: "Through this New Year celebration, I would like to send out a message for peace and unity among us."

Meanwhile, a large number of people from different communities came out to celebrate the Bengali New Year or Poila Baishakh in Tripura.

Markets were crowded with people of all age groups who bought gifts and sweets for their loved ones.

On the occasion people also cleaned and decorated their houses.

Businessmen and traders purchased new accounts book, and started new accounts known as 'Haalkhata'.

Everybody wished for peace and prosperity of the region.

Sujit Paul, a businessman, said: "Right from the past, we have been celebrating this day, and for a Bengali, it is very auspicious. We go to the temple to pray and businessmen open "Halkhata" (new accounts book) and pray for peace and prosperity in the coming days."

This year, the Chakma Tribe celebrated Biju festival along with the Bengali New Year.

The festival marks the beginning of the Jhum cultivation, and on the occasion, a prayer is offered to Mother Earth for a good harvest.

During the festival, near and dear ones are invited and various delicacies are made for them.

Bimanjyoti Khisa, a visitor from the Chakma Tribe, said: "On this festival we forget all our tension and enmity, and we welcome everyone to celebrate the occasion together."

Such festivals bring together people of different communities thereby promoting a sense of unity and brotherhood.
