Italy's Civil Protection agency has said it believed the remains, which were found by the divers on the wrecked Costa Concordia cruise ship, belonged to an Indian waiter.
Russel Rebello, an Indian national, was a cruise waiter who was last seen helping passengers off the ship, the BBC reports.
Rebello's family has been informed about the development, the report added.
However, the results will take several days to be confirmed.
The bodies of Rebello and Maria Grazia Trecarichi of Sicily have been missing from the 2012 wreck, but they were presumed to be dead.
