Kalki Koechlin starrer 'Margarita, with a Straw' has won the NETPAC (Network for the Promotion of Asian Cinema) award for Best Asian Film at the 39th Toronto International Film Festival.
The film, which is directed by Shonali Bose, revolves around Laila (Koechlin), a young romantic and a secret rebel in a wheelchair, who is undeterred by cerebral palsy and embarks on exhilarating adventures of self discovery, causing rift both within and her loved ones.
The NETPAC Jury comprising Lekha Shankar (India), Hannah Fisher (China) and Anderson Le (Hawaii) said that the is both universal and groundbreaking and the directo Bose and Koechlin have jointly created a character and a world that embody a love letter to life, with all its highs and lows, in spite of overwhelming physical limitations.
It was earlier reported that Alan Turing's biopic 'The Imitation Game' has won the People's Choice award at the festival.
