Former Egyptian President Mohammed Morsi has been sentenced to 20 years in jail for ordering the arrest and torture of protesters during his rule in 2012.

According to BBC, Morsi and 14 other Brotherhood figures escaped the charge of inciting the killing of protesters.

Morsi has received the first verdict since his ousting in 2013 and it was one of the several trials he is facing.

Morsi was overthrown by the army in July 2013 following mass street protests against his rule.

Most of other defendants, along with Morsi, were also given 20 year prison sentence.
