The navy on Friday said it was on standby to provide assistance in Mumbai in light of the heavy rains that have lashed the city.

Ministry of Defence principal spokesperson Sitanshu Kar shared the information via a series of tweets.

"#MumbaiRains Indian Navy fully geared up to provide any assistance to the city of Mumbai."

"#MumbaiRains As per SOP, Indian Navy pre-deployed with naval divers and inflatable boats across Mumbai."

"#MumbaiRains Rescue teams deployed across the length and breadth of Mumbai."

"#MumbaiRains Indian Navy in touch with BMC, Disaster Management Cell & other civic authorities. Sea King Heptrs standing by at Colaba."

Bombay High Court Chief Justice Mohit S. Shah on Friday declared a public holiday for all courts in the city due to the excessive rain, which has disrupted normal life.

According to reports, several flights have either been delayed or are being diverted due to heavy water logging.

Meanwhile, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has reportedly asked residents not to venture out of their homes unless 'absolutely necessary'.

The BMC had earlier ordered schools in Mumbai to close in view of the heavy rain and problems related to water logging.

The heavy overnight rain has disrupted local train services and traffic in several parts of the city has been moving at a snail's pace.
