Northeast fest in Delhi promotes region's rich culture

New Delhi, Apr. 2 (ANI): Myriad colours and flavours from the North-East were on display at Hindu College in the national capital recently.

The two day-long 'Northeast Fest' was organized by the Northeast Cell of Hindu College with the support of the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports.

The event not only showcased the culture and traditions of the region but also aimed to create awareness about its prospects and potentials.

The major attraction at the venue was the food court where mouth watering Manipuri food like Shingju, Bora, Paknam were being sold.

"The main purpose of NEF is to create the bond between the people from mainland India and northeast. Our main aim is also to promote our cultures through different shows like fashion show and music that is how we bring different people from the corner of the country together," said organizer Riddhi Mahanta.

 

A colourful handicrafts and fine artistry from the region was also displayed during the event.

Students also exhibited photography on the various themes depicting the life in the northeast.

"Basically we are trying to attract the people towards northeast. Many people are unfamiliar about northeast when we talk about northeast what comes in our mind we think about tribal people but here we want to showcase there are 8 states and each has its own culture and we are trying to focus on different culture and heritage of northeast," said Arnab Chetia, a student.

"The basic motive was exactly to come up, to promote their culture so that people who do not know they get to know how rich culture theses northeastern people have they are so talented, they are so beautiful they are just equal. Their face is different or they cannot speak Hindi it doesn't mean they are alien at the end they are Indian," said Tania Arora, another student.

Students also competed in different events like Hip-Hop, rapping, beat boxing and singing to showcase their talents.

Performances by various bands, during the evening were enthralling.

Paper boat, a musical band comprising members from six states enthralled the audience.

The band played Nepalese, Hindi and Punjabi songs.

Later, Girish and the chronicles, a Hard Rock band from Sikkim entertained the crowd with their electrifying performance.

The fest received a heartening response from students of various backgrounds and cultures.

"I felt very good performing in front of the crowd and it's a northeast fest and half of us are from Northeast and it's amazing to be part of this festival," said Yuden Bhutia, Vocalist, Paperboat Music Band.

Such festival forges a sense of unity and shared belongingness of composite culture among the people who hail from different parts of the country.
