Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday condoled the deaths of five people who were killed after the Delhi-Dibrugarh Rajdhani Express train derailed.

"The PM has condoled the loss of lives due to the accident of the Dibrugarh Rajdhani Express. He prays for the speedy recovery of the injured," tweeted the Prime Minister's Office.

"PM is in touch with the Railway Minister, who updated the PM on the relief work at the accident site," it further tweeted.

At least five people were killed and eight others injured when the Delhi-Dibrugarh Rajdhani express derailed this morning at around 2.15 a.m. near Chhapra.

The derailment of the train in the Maoist-affected area of Chhapra in Bihar, on the day of a bandh called by them, has raised suspicion over what caused the accident.

Railway Minister Sadanand Gowda, before heading for the accident spot, had said that the mishap seemed to be a case of Maoist sabotage.

"Prima facie it is learnt that it is due to sabotage but as far as Rajdhani is concerned practically we don't have much news of accident but of course there was a bandh call given by Maoists so the cause is yet to be known," said Gowda.

Gowda has announced a compensation of Rs two lakh for the deceased and Rs one lakh for those who were injured.
