A former minister in Muammar Gaddafi's government has been sentenced to death for inciting violence during 2011 civil war.

A court in Misrata found Ahmed Ibrahim guilty of undermining national security and plotting the killing of civilians during protests that led to the overthrow of the slain Libyan dictator in 2011.

According to news24, the death sentence is first such ruling against a Gaddafi-era official.

His lawyer, Salim Dans, said Libya's supreme court would have to confirm the ruling for the death penalty to be implemented.

Ibrahim held several senior positions, including education and information minister, and was arrested by Misratan rebel fighters in Gaddafi's home town Sirte, the report added.
