A new study has revealed that being bilingual allows to keep the brain sharp.

Researchers found that the strongest development was seen in general intelligence and reading, the Daily Express reported.

Dr Thomas Bak, of the Centre for Cognitive Ageing and Cognitive Epidemiology at the University of Edinburgh said that the study has established that bilingualism, even when acquired in adulthood may benefit the aging brain.

However, scientists are still unsure whether people who already have sharper minds are more likely to become bilingual or they improve their cognitive functions through learning new languages.

The study was published in the journal Annals of Neurology.
