A teenaged Liverpool player had reportedly spent a night in jail and is facing a trial, to be held next month, for allegedly attacking his beauty queen girlfriend.
According to the Mirror, 18-year-old Raheem Sterling was alleged to have assaulted model Shana Halliday just hours after the announcement of his inclusion in the England Under-21 squad which will face Scotland in a friendly in Sheffield on Tuesday.
The report further said that the Jamaican winger was later released on bail, although a club spokesman said that he has denied the charges against him and has pleaded not guilty to a charge of common assault.
According to the court hearing, Sterling and Halliday had argued as they drove home to Merseyside from Manchester on Thursday after a day out celebrating her birthday, with the report adding that Halliday is expected to be the only witness at his trial.
Sterling made his full England debut in November but missed the end of last season with a thigh injury while Halliday, a former sales assistant at clothing store Hollister, won the England's Top Model of the World pageant in March, the report added.
