A secret document has revealed that the British government had planned to flood low-lying areas decades ago to protect London from mass destruction.
According to the Daily Express News, the Home Affairs Department said that the plans to flood Kent and Essex could cause hundreds of casualties and an estimated loss of more than 250 million pounds.
The emergency arrived because the work was stalled at the Thames barrier following a dock strike in Teesside.
The contingency documents dated from July 25, 1979 to December 22, 1983 and were unearthed from the National Archives of the state, the report added.
It was also noted that the plan was incalculable as it could result in looting, civil disorder and a mass evacuation, making certain areas virtually uninhabitable.
