Kharif crop sowing touched 966.25 lakh hectares as on 29 August

Rice and cotton sowing higher than last year's level, but other crops show lower sowing coverage

As per the latest reports of sowing of kharif crops, kharif sowing area touched 966.25 lakh hectares as on 29 August 2014 compared to 998.01 lakh hectares touched same of the last season. The delayed southwest monsoon rainfall has hit sowing progress of kharif crops.

The rice sown/transplanted at 350.02 lakh hectares stands above the last years coverage of 349.76 lakh hectares. Meanwhile, the pulses sowing at 95.4 lakh hectares and coarse cereals sowing at 170.83 lakh hectares was below last year's coverage of 100.64 lakh hectares and 190.64 lakh hectares as on date.

 

The area under oilseeds crops at 172.21 lakh hectares was below last year level of 186.7 lakh hectares as on 29 August 2014.

The planting of sugarcane and cotton is in progress. Sugarcane has been planted in 47.17 lakh hectares and cotton in 122.51 lakh hectares. Further, the area under jute and mesta stood at 8.11 lakh hectares as on 29 August 2014.
