Wheat sowing has touched 288.98 lakh hectares
As per the Ministry of Agriculture, the area sown to Rabi crops stood at 577.3 lakh hectares (lh) as on 15 January, which is 3.1% lower compared with 595.78 lh sown same time a year ago.The area sown to coarse cereals has increased over previous year, but that under pulses, oilseeds, wheat and rice has declined in the current season.
Wheat has been sown in 288.98 lh as on 15 January against 303.51 lh last year on this date. The area under rabi rice was lower at 18.84 lh as on 15 January compared with 19.96 lh same time last year.
The area under coarse cereals increased 6.6% to 58.18 lh as on 15 January 2016 compared with 54.58 lh same time a year ago.
The area sown to pulses has shown a decline of 2.5% to 136.39 lh as on 15 January. The area sown to oilseeds witnessed 3.7% decline to 74.91 lh as on 15 January 2016.
