6.9-magnitude quake jolts Indonesia

An earthquake measuring 6.9 on the Richter scale shook Indonesia on Wednesday, the Meteorology and Geophysics Agency said here.

The quake occurred at 17.21 p.m. Jakarta time, with the epicentre at 99 km southeast of Maluku Tengah of Maluku province and the depth of 10 km under sea bed, an official of the agency told Xinhua news agency.

But the US Geological Survey reported that the quake occurred at a depth of 33.9 km under the sea bed.

Indonesia is prone to quakes as it lies on a vulnerable zone called "the Pacific Ring of Fire".
