AGP sets up panel to devise strategy for LS polls

IANS Guwahati

Assam's Asom Gana Parishad (AGP), which broke its alliance with the BJP over the Citizenship bill, has set up a nine-member committee to devise its strategy for the upcoming Lok Sabha polls, a party leader said on Thursday

The regional party was in alliance with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) since the 2016 Assam Assembly polls but broke the alliance after the BJP went ahead with the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016 despite its stiff opposition.

"We had held our executive committee meeting and the committee has instituted a nine-member panel to devise strategy for the Lok Sabha polls. The committee would hold meetings with party members at different levels and assess the party's strength and strategy on how to face the polls," AGP leader Ramendra Narayan Kalita on Thursday.

"The committee will also take a decision on whether we will go to polls in alliance with another party or not," he said, adding that the party is against the Citizenship bill and its stand has remain unchanged.

There were however speculations that the AGP might join the BJP-led ruling alliance in Assam again as the saffron party failed to table and pass the Citizenship Bill in the Rajya Sabha after it was passed by the Lok Sabha last month.
