The Andhra Pradesh government Sunday urged the central government to declare cyclone Hudhud a national calamity and provide Rs.2,000 crore as an interim relief package.

Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu has written a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi with this demand.

Earlier in the day, Modi spoke to Naidu over phone and assured all assistance in rescue and relief operations.

The severe cyclonic storm Sunday hit Andhra coast near Visakhapatnam, causing widespread damage to infrastructure. Three people were killed in rain related incidents.

Naidu said that the government was able to reduce loss of life due to the precautionary measures taken. However, he directed officials to take up start restoration works for power poles, transformers, railway lines, tanks and reservoirs on war-footing from Monday.
